“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
-Carol Sobieski and Thomas Meehan, Annie
We meet one last time in the Saint Michael Room back at the orphanage. There isn’t much left for us to do on this trip. We begin to gather our things together for the long ride back to San Pedro Sula, and then home.
Before we go, the girls have one last gift gift for us. Vanessa plays her guitar, and the rest of the girls help her to serenade us with a song of thanksgiving and farewell. They have gifts for us; mementos for us to take back to our lives in Kansas. They are so grateful for our friendship and care.
There are more songs, and more laughter as we all reflect on the extraordinary week that we have shared. The mood is bitter sweet, and no one wants the evening to end. We don’t know, after all, when we will meet again.
Underneath this sadness, however, is a warm glow. Everyone in the room understands that we will see one another again. We are, after all, family.
