Travel – while we all like to reach our destination, typically the journey is not the favorite part. Yesterday was long – we arrived at the airport in Kansas City about 4:30 am and reached the Hogar de Ancianos (home for the elderly) after 6:00 pm. A major road project between San Pedro Sula and Santa Rosa de Copán made the trip a little longer than usual. But in spite of the noise, chaos and delays of our travel day – we felt God’s presence in the simple gift of hospitality and genuine love shared with us upon arrival.
We arrived in Honduras and made our way through customs and were surprised to see the waiting area completely packed with people waiting for families and friends to arrive. As we moved through the crowd, we spotted Don Christian (the driver for the homes) with two sisters carrying a large sign welcoming our team to Honduras along with fresh bouquets of flowers for each of us. This was the first time we met the new head sisters in each home, Sor Delmy and Sor Mathilde. What a grace-filled, beautiful welcome we received!
After lunch, we started on our road trip – picture Mario Kart, now imagine it in a van at high speeds with 12+ pieces of luggage strapped to the roof…by-the-way, should we mention the rain? We stopped for a coffee break midway and again were grateful for the considerate and thoughtfulness of our hosts. A cheer went up in the van when the first sign of Santa Rosa was spotted! All of the nuns at the elderly home greeted us with warm welcomes and hugs and helped us unpack our luggage. The elderly were already tucked in for the night so we hurried and made our way to the Hogar de Niñas where we were greeted with the widest of smiles and warmest hugs. The nuns treated us to a delicious Honduran special dinner of baleadas. We headed to our rooms excited for the week ahead, humbled and grateful for the gift of each person we had met.
Paz y bien
