The morning began early (for some a little too early, gotta love those roosters!). We gathered the gifts we brought and headed over to a local shelter to serve breakfast and distribute blankets made by St. Michael students. It was very humbling to stand in solidarity and pray with so many who are probably getting their only meal of the day. We are so blessed!
We went across the street to a house for expectant mothers who travel from their villages to be near the hospital. We served breakfast, prayed and visited with the women. We handed out gift bags containing a onesie, rattle, book, etc and blankets we brought from St. Michaels. The Beanie Babies were a hit! After, we gathered at the Hogar de Ancianos for breakfast with the nuns and spent some time with the elderly, we received such warm greetings from old friends and many new elderly at the home. But…it’s time to move on…again!
We gathered the toys and games we brought for the girls and headed to the orphanage. It is now almost 11:00am! We love long days here because it makes it seem like we’re here longer than our actual 7-8 days!!
At the orphanage we were welcomed again with laughter and many hugs, the 50th humbling moment of our day. We spent the day playing, talking and re-connecting. There is so much love among this family. A family not made of blood but of circumstance which makes it even more impactful.
Robin & Mike began the arduous task of repainting the basketball court and four-square lines. Immediately girls dropped the game or craft they were doing and went to help. It’s amazing to see these girls jumping in to help with this labor, without being asked. More amazing, humbling moments!
The rest of the day and evening have been filled with too many things to write about here but some highlights were- Sor Dinora coming from Guatemala to see both the girls and us, touring the orphanage and seeing improvements that have been made (primarily due to St Michael’s generous parishioners), visits from 2 girls who grew up in the orphanage and traveled far to come see us, the rosary being said and sung together with the girls and nuns, dinner with the nuns sharing stories and more laughter and finally coming together as a team, just the 5 of us at the end of a long day to share our personal highs and unexpected God-moments…ending the day as we began, thanking God for the many blessings we have received (and praying we have internet in the morning to make these posts!).
Buenas noches!
Lynn, Mike, Magda, Robin and Jane
