Wednesday: ¡Un Bienvenido á Honduras!

We woke up in the wee hours in Leawood and made our way to the airport. Despite the FAA computer system failure nationwide, we made our flight to Atlanta and then after a wait on the tarmac, we ran to catch our flight to Honduras. They held the flight for our whole group and all of our baggage made it as well…we were off – no turning back now!!

We landed in Honduras only about 10-15 minutes later than scheduled and met Sor Deisy, Sor Matilde, Don Cristian and Senor M. Antonio at the airport. The nuns and chicas had made a beautiful heart sign with the American and Honduran flags and all our names to greet us. We stopped for a fried chicken and french fry dinner in San Pedro Sula then headed towards Santa Rosa de Copan – bumping and bouncing in the passenger van and pickup truck through the lush green mountains. After two hours, a quick coffee shop stop we journeyed onward another 1 1/2 hours.

We arrived at the Hogar de Ancianos a little past 8 pm and were greeted by fireworks, several of the nuns and girls at the gates. There were tears and lots and lots of hugs!! Then on to the Hogar de Niñas – the girls all greeted us with confetti, hugs, smiles and song!! It was awesome!! They had made a backdrop with our names and treated us like royalty. They sang us several songs even though it was actually pretty late by this time. The nuns treated us to a delicious dinner of soup and baleadas. It was great to talk to the nuns. Some of them are new to the homes in the recent past year or so. Then we went back to our little house “casita”, did a short reflection on the day and headed to bed.

I can’t wait for tomorrow!
