Thursday: Quinceañera!

Thursday was a very special and long anticipated day for everyone present at the Hogar de Niñas. It was our first full day here and the Quinceañera celebration for two lovely young ladies. Carmen Gabriela and Maria Deisy celebrated their 15th birthdays in grand fashion. We started with Mass said by the beloved Bishop Darwin.

After Mass and many, many pictures, we went to the courtyard to celebrate with music and dancing. While most of the girls seem somewhat shy, we were able to get most of them on the courtyard dance floor and having Seminarian Cesar there was very helpful in this endeavor. The weather was glorious, and the joy of the Holy Spirit was in the center of it all. A delicious feast of chicken, beef, sausage, rice and fresh pico de gallo nourished us after all the dancing. We finished the meal with a beautiful cake and a serenade for the birthday girls.

In preparation for the feast day of Madre Paula, the foundress of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception who run the homes, we are attending a novena service daily.  The girls play music and lead a rosary.

After a short break, we returned to the Hogar de Niñas and spent the evening playing games such as Red Light/Green Light, Simon Says and a few of the local favorites.  Almost all the girls participated regardless of their age.  The dancing, feasting and games made for a great night of sleep last night.

The best part of the day is seeing the joy on the girls faces and watching how they care for each other!  We have also been able to take a few minutes to enjoy the lovely flowers in the garden outside of the house.
