Becoming a Rose, Jan. 25

Another dreary wet cooler day. Lots of happiness for the beautiful gardens around though. Nature’s beauty conquers all negativity, especially when paired with all of the happy energy around.

We started with breakfast with the Sors at the Hogar de Acianos. Today pancakes, along with omelets and fresh fruit filled our plates.

After, we ventured upstairs to visit the elderly. They discovered many creative sides as we both painted and played games together before heading across the street to spend time with the niñas. There we had some delicious soup that the Sors prepared along with a fresh yummy salad and baked chicken. One thing that I have not forgotten from my previous two trips here is how wonderful their cooking is.

There was a planned Career Panel, so our job was to help occupy the smaller ninas so the larger ones could get listen to the speakers. We painted with them as well but the biggest hit was the pictures that were created sticker by number.

For the Career Panel, a couple of the alumni along with the sisters and a local small business owner were asked to share their personal stories about their career and vocations. Sonia, who owns a local coffee and candle shop spoke about her long journey to success. She encouraged the alumni from the Hogar de Niñas to work hard and get an education. She explained how her own success was brought on by having a college degree and various connections in order to climb that ladder.

Before having a pizza party and meeting with many of the alumni, we met with five alumni who had all chosen to walk down paths in the medical field. Two are studying to be physicians, and three are in the nursing program at the nearby Catholic University. Estefani was one of them who is studying to become a neurosurgeon. She and I talked to great length about my own experience as related to neurology. Which led to talking about the importance of health and well-being. We agreed that just the act of Faith leads to comfort and happiness all around

It’s such a neat thing, getting to see the growth. Just as the team agreed in our reflection tonight, these young girls that we first meet at the Hogar de Niñas blossom into a beautiful rose. Jill
