A JOYFUL Farewell, July 10

Our final day at the Hogar de Niñas and the Hogar de Ancianos was wrapped in grace. While our days have flown by, the morning began with quiet prayer and reflection. By 9:00 a.m., we were gathered at the Hogar de Niñas for Mass. The girls’ voices rose in song, carrying us straight into the heart of God. We sat among familiar faces on familiar benches, and a certain bittersweet ache, not knowing when we will next sit beside these sisters, elders and girls in this special place.

After Mass, we made a brief but inspiring visit to a shelter for expectant mothers. These women journey from villages both near and distant, arriving just before their due dates to receive care, safety, and dignity. We admired their deep reverence for life and marveled at their quiet courage. Their witness reminded us: life is a gift, and every mother bears it with a strength that echoes Mary’s own fiat.

On the way back, we stopped at El Café de Las Velas to pick up coffee and gifts for our annual fall drive. The scent of freshly roasted beans mingled with the joy of reunion as we were warmly greeted by staff one of which is an alumni of the Hogar de Niñas and one of the “alumni” jovenes who lived and worked at the Hogar de Ancianos.

In the evening, joy took center stage. We gathered one last time with both current residents and beloved alumni of the Hogar de Niñas. It felt like a family reunion, laughter, music, dancing, stories shared across generations. Oh- and PIZZA! The alumni gifted us a beautiful video chronicling some moments from the past 20 years, a tribute to the community that raised them and the love that continues to bind us together.

We were deeply touched by all who lingered for one more hug, one more photo, one more chance to connect heart to heart.

We closed the day just as it began: in prayer. While our mission includes supporting capital needs, our deepest calling is this; to walk with, not ahead. To listen. To stay steady. To accompany with reverence and presence. Tegucigalpa – here we come!! Next up – Casa del Niño! Juanita
