The day started with the celebration of one of our missionaries, John’s, birthday. The Sors played guitar and sang to him, then brought out a cake. However, we’d also bought him a cake, leaving us with two! Next we went to the girls house, to celebrate mass with the girls. We got a special blessing from the priest there, along with a brief moment in adoration to share with the girls.
We went to the elderly home to decorate for a fiesta to celebrate the epiphany, with streamers, balloons, and gold crowns that we gave to all the residents. They were all so excited about the music, dancing, and most of all the cake!
After that we went to the girl’s house for lunch, and got to spend some time doing a Lego competition, that consisted of 4 teams making Lego creations to try and win. Our team made a couple of zoo type animals, including a cat that didn’t really look like a cat. The girls seemed thrilled with how hard I was laughing at the cat, so they didn’t really seem upset when our team lost.
We stopped by the elderly home with flowers that the girls made yesterday, so they could present them to the elderly and sing a song. I was so happy to see the connections between the elderly and the young, even witnessing it made me happy. One of the residents brought a set of maracas so he could play with the girls. They spent some time afterward individually laughing with him.
After that, we headed back to the girls house for pizza! Everyone was very excited to try something they didn’t have every day – and some of the missionaries were excited to get a taste of home. After dinner, (and another two cakes for John) the girls put on a show full of so many fun acts that was a bit like a talent show. There was dancing, singing, and playing music – and all of the girls looked like they were having a blast the whole time.
Saying goodbye was so difficult, because it was clear that both groups were getting emotional at the thought of leaving. However, we reassured them that this wouldn’t be a permanent goodbye, and that they were our family no matter the distance. While I was certainly emotional tonight, I’m so grateful for the oppertunity I had to bond with the girls and understand their stories. Sabrina
